LAMDA Speech and Drama at Westminster Under School

Children will look more closely at characters, scripts and playwrights and begin to develop their critical thinking. They will also learn the importance of sound spatial awareness and present a diverse range of scenes from chosen plays to an audience.

Ages 8 - 13 at Westminster Under School.

From the age of 8 children will learn to refine their techniques by exploring a range of characterisation, developing sound spatial awareness, interacting with others on stage, exploring vocal range and understanding how to analyse a script. This core work will be interspersed with movement, physical theatre and ensemble acting.

Children will explore the following areas: -

  • Classic and contemporary monologues, duologues and scene study

For children who wish to sit the LAMDA Speech and Drama Graded Examinations in Acting: -

  • Aged 8 - Entry 3: Entry Level. The learner will perform a scene of their own choice from memory. The learner will define character in relation to the chosen scene and be prepared to answer questions based on the appearance of the character and how the character is feeling in the selected scene. Exam duration: 10 minutes.
  • Aged 9 - Level 1: Grade 1. The learner (or learners as they may work as a pair to present duologues, if desired) will perform a scene from memory which has been selected from the Level 1 section of the LAMDA  Acting Anthology, Volume 2. They will then perform a second scene from memory of their own choice. Exam duration: 15 minutes/20 minutes for duologues. 
  • Aged 10 - Level 1: Grade 2. The learner/s will perform from memory as scene selected from the Level 1 section of the LAMDA  Acting Anthology. They will then perform a second scene from memory of their own choice. Exam duration: 15/20 minutes.
  • Aged 11 - Level 1: Grade 3. The learner/s will perform from memory a scene selected from the Level 1 section of the LAMDA  Acting Anthology. They will then perform a second scene from memory of their own choice. Exam duration: 15/20 minutes.
  • Aged 12/13- Level 2: Grade 4. The learner/s will perform from memory a scene which has been selected from the Level 2 section of the LAMDA  Acting Anthology. They will then perform a scene from memory of their own choice which must differ in theme, setting, type of character and mood. Exam duration: 20 minutes/30 minutes duologues.
